Today in 6A & 6B
ENGLISH: Today was testing day for Unit 1 vocabulary and grammar. On Monday we start Unit 2.
RELIGION: Also test day! a short quiz, open book to wrap up Session 2.
AR read/math: Students had a giant block of time to catch up on missed assignments and make strides toward their AR goals.
SOCIAL STUDIES: Today we began our activity for the next several days. Students were each assigned a role as a stakeholder in the controversial construction of a new football stadium. They are tasked with researching and writing a persuasive speech that they will present to the class in a mock "town hall" discussion Monday. This statement is meant to be no more than 2 minutes long yet still be persuasive enough to sway hearts and minds. This is their only homework for this weekend.

Today in 6A & 6B
ENGLISH: In advance of our first English test tomorrow, today was chapter review. Students worked independently through sections A-D of the chapter review on pages 27-29. We took up these answers together as a class and then edited, using our proofreading symbols, the passage in section E together. Students will be asked to edit a similar passage on their test tomorrow. There is no homework but students should study their iWords as well as the writing process that they have been working on this week.
LITERATURE: Since we reached the midpoint of our "Crash" reading, its' high time we captured some of our understanding. Students were tasked with creating a Digital Collage of 7-10 images that encapsulate the happenings of the book so far. Students were asked to write a sentence that explains each choice of imagery. If this was not submitted in class, it is homework.
RELIGION: Today we wrapped up session two of Unit 1, which explored God's creation and our role as stewards of this earth. This includes our treatment of other people, regardless of race or gender. We will have another open-book session quiz tomorrow.
SOCIAL STUDIES: Today we practiced our Analysis skills (p.24) in identifying the main point of each paragraph of a selection, differentiating between this and supporting information. Students then applied these concepts to the 5 Analysis questions at the top of p. 27 which reference texts earlier in the chapter (p.22/23). This work was completed in class. Students then engaged in a thought experiment which had them identify in what ways would our lives be similar to or different from early Homo sapiens should we be stranded on a desert island.
MATH (8:00 class) metric system pg 26 1-24 (9:00 class) Subtracting Integers pg 31 20-37
SCIENCE Read pgs 18-22 Do questions 1-3 on pg 22

Today in 6A & 6B
ENGLISH: Students built on their efforts in learning the writing process by starting a new composition, which is posted on Google Classroom. In class students practiced pre-writing and writing their initial draft. Students were then asked to use the "suggestion" feature on Google Docs to explain their revisions. The intention here is that I get to see both their initial thoughts in writing and see how they would propose to change it. Next they use a different color font in order to edit their piece. From a grammar perspective, this tells me how well they recognize errors in spelling, mechanics and punctuation. If this was not completed between class time and AR time, it is homework. The first quiz will be this Friday.
RELIGION: We advanced to Session 2 of Unit 1 where we speak about God's creation and how he saw everything as good. As an exercise, students identified something that is widely perceived as "bad" bad celebrated its positive traits (ie: Volcanos are destructive, but they produce new land and rich fertile soil)
SOCIAL STUDIES: We continued our examination of Otzi the Iceman. Students worked in small groups to explore and share answers. We finished the class with a discussion of what we learned from this activity, both holistically about research and specifically about Otzi. This document should be submitted today. It is not homework because it was preparation for our discussion and practice for conducting research.

Today in 6A & 6B
RELIGION: Our first test of the year! (if you're not counting STAR testing...) Unit 1, Session 1. This is what students can expect our weekly tests to look like. They should be graded and posted by the end of the week.
ENGLISH: Picking up where we left off yesterday, we revisited our rough drafts and worked on Revising our work. Students learned that revision is expected to be a slow and meticulous process, and differs from Editing/Proofreading. Students read their compositions several times, each time looking for a different Key Trait of Good Writing. For homework students are expected to write a new "clean draft" and use the editing checklist on p.17 to mark up this new draft.
LITERATURE: Continuing with "Crash" today, students saw how Crash responded to the disappointment of not having his parents see him play football. Additionally, students reflected on Crash's reaction to Penn Webb's parents cheering him on. Students made predictions on what they think will happen next in the story.
STAR Testing (Math) in 6A
SOCIAL STUDIES: Today students were issued their first assignment through Google Classroom, "Who is Otzi the Iceman?" This is an excellent opportunity for students to witness both and archaeological excavation as well as gain insight into life from thousands of years ago. THIS IS NOT HOMEWORK. Students are encouraged to spend no more than 30 minutes continuing their search and will be given ~15 minutes in class before we discuss the findings together tomorrow.

Today in 6A & 6B
ENGLISH: we began our Grammar week this week as we look at the writing process, today with pre-writing and drafting. Students are asked to product their initial draft of their writing piece (min 1/2 page-max full page. Hand written in the composition books).
LITERATURE: We continued with "Crash" today as we read chapters 12-17. Here students identified some of the motives of the main character's angst, particularly the young man's home life and the like-mindedness of his new friend Mike Deluca. The bullying tactics of the two boys are on full display at this point too, while Crash's sister shows sympathy and understanding for Penn Webb.
Spanish: Itinerant taught.
RELIGION: Today was chapter review day. Tomorrow first thing we will have our first quiz which will be open book.
SOCIAL STUDIES: On pages 18-23 of the text we learned how early man is now evolved and has begun migrating all over the world. We learned what factors influenced this movement and how moving toward a place has affected the culture of these Homo sapiens as well as begun to provide for the geography of place to affect the genetic differences of peoples (red hair vs brown hair, blue eyes vs brown eyes, etc.). Homework for this evening is on Page 23 of the text, questions 1-5.
