Today in 6A & 6B

RELIGION: Today we postponed our scheduled session test in lieu of a grade-wide discussion regarding bullying harassment and inappropriate behavior of a sexual nature. Due to an incident involving some of our students, our administrators decided it necessary to discuss the consequences of such inappropriate behavior. Mr. Gray and Mr. VanRuyven explained this information to all 6th grade boys while Dr. O'Bannion lead our girls in this discussion. The instructional information can be found on the following website: https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/harassment.html
Our Religion Test will be issued Monday.

ENGLISH: Today was our chapter review of our grammar week. Because we are away at the La Brea Tar Pits tomorrow, this test will be on Monday. This chapter review was not assigned as homework, however, students are well aware of their performance on the first test and will each need to make a decision on what level of preparation will be necessary for them to be ready for Monday's test. The test will include the grammar lessons from this week in addition to last weeks vocabulary words. I encourage all students to make use of our online materials for both sections.

LITERATURE: Students continued work on their comic strips for Crash. They will have one more in-class session to work on these pieces when they will be turned in Tuesday (6A) or Wednesday (6B).

SOCIAL STUDIES: Due to today's earthquake drill, we held our Social Studies class together to outline the details of tomorrow's field trip. Students are aware that they need to pack a sack lunch, that they are to be in proper uniform, that they will not be bringing their cell phones, as well as the detailed timeline of our trip (as detailed as anyone can get when driving into LA traffic). We are all super jazzed for the day tomorrow.

Today in 6A & 6B

ENGLISH: Finishing the unit work for Parts of a Sentence, we looked at Direct Objects and Subject Complements. Students practiced these skills using the www.grammarforwriting.com website, and are encouraged to do more practice here as they prepare for Monday's unit test.

AR READING/MATH: Students all completed the AR quiz for "Crash" earning valuable points toward their STAR reading goals. Additionally, students worked on their comic strips that are due Tuesday (Mr. VanRuyven) or Wednesday (Mr. Gray).

RELIGION: Today we summarized our Abraham session, reviewing his role as patriarch of the chosen people. We also made prayer intentions for next Monday's morning assembly. 4 or 5 students will be chosen to read prayers at that assembly.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Students submitted their Agricultural Revolution Infographics at the start of class, via Google Classroom. We then dove in to our new lesson exploring the rise of cities and civilizations. This lesson builds on our early farming lessons by incorporating the concepts of surplus and specialization. This helped our ancestors pursue their personal interests, whatever they may be, to grow and develop various civilizations simultaneously around the globe. Students were assigned questions #1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 on page 45 for homework.

Today in 6A & 6B

ENGLISH: We continued our lessons on the parts of a sentence, today focusing on hard to find subjects and compound subjects and verbs. This is a significant step up in difficulty from our work yesterday. Students used the online practice sheets on the www.grammarforwriting.com website (6.3 and 6.4). While this is not assigned as homework, students should understand these concepts and make use of these worksheets for practice.

LITERATURE: Today we finished "Crash". Students are now able to take a STAR reading test on this book and gain points toward their reading goals for trimester 1. As a capstone assignment, students have been assigned the task (via Google Classroom) of illustrating a comic of their favorite/most meaningful/most important scene from the book. The rubric for grading is attached to the assignment. Students were given some time today to work on this in class and should have at least one more session to work on this in class. This will be due on Tuesday, October 2, 2018.

RELIGION: We continued with our look at Abraham and his covenant with God. We examined a painting that depicts a group of people dancing the Hora.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Students continued their work in creating their infographics for the Stone Age Agricultural revolution. This is due (submitted on Google Classroom) at the start of class tomorrow.

SCIENCE  CHAPTER 1 TEST TOMORROW !!!

Monday, September 24, 2018

Today in 6A & 6B

ENGLISH: As we transition to a Grammar week, we are learning the Parts of a Sentence, namely, Subjects and Predicates. Students practiced identifying complete subjects and predicates and then refined their focus to simple subjects and simple predicates. We made use of some additional practice on www.grammarforwriting.com and I encourage all students to make use of the exercises here to improve in this skill. All of this will help us become better writers and better peer critiques.

LITERATURE: We began the final installment of "Crash" today, however we were called out to partake in picture day and were unable to finish the book. We will finish it tomorrow and students will be given their summative assessment for this reading then.

RELIGION: As we learn about Abraham and Sarah, we examine an event from our own lives when we were faced with a difficult task that we were successful at completing, and how that sense of accomplishment made us feel. Students illustrated these moments in their composition books.

SOCIAL STUDIES: To reinforce our exploration into Early Agriculture last week, students were assigned a task on Google Classroom where they are creating infographics that help to communicate this message. The instructions are on Google Classroom however students are guided to focus on how these improvements/changes impacted the lives of these early humans. Students will continue this assignment in class tomorrow.

Today in 6A!

AR reading time - Students were given a full hour today to make up missed tests, meet reading or math goals, or work on homework.

ENGLISH: In applying some of our vocabulary today, students completed a 15 minute quick-write in response to one of 2 prompts, and were asked to include as many of our vocabulary words as they could. The purpose of this exercise is to simply allow students to write as a stream of consciousness. To practice getting words down on a page in their original thought. Students then shared their writing with a peer and revised each others' work. If time allowed, they would work on a second draft immediately below their original.

RELIGION: We held our Session 3 test today.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Today we started a new chapter, exploring some of the most significant moment in human history, the choice to colonize and create stationary settlements. Everything we know and have today stems from this great revolution, the Agricultural Revolution. Homework: p.37 #1, 2, 4, 5

Thursday, September 20, 2018

Today in 6A & 6B

RELIGION: Today was review for our session test tomorrow. The test will be open-book.

ENGLISH: Today students were given the key words and asked to provide the definition. This can be tricky because some of our words have multiple Noun, Verb, and/or Adjective definitions. This serves as a tougher challenge as we root our vocabulary in our regular use. From here students practiced their writing in a timed essay.

LITERATURE: Continuing with our "Crash" read, students learned that Crash is reeling from his grandfather's stroke and that he is recognizing a change in himself. He no longer finds the same cruel behaviors appealing and is losing touch with his best friend, Mike, all the while feeling a bit ore sympathetic towards Penn Webb. The students have had some pretty great insights and predictions for the final installment that we are set to read on Monday.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We held our Chapter 1 test today and all students managed to complete it well within the allotted time frame.

MATH (8:00 class) pg 36 1-48  (9:00 class) pg 47 1-38

Today in 6A & 6B

ENGLISH: Today's activity was possibly the most difficult of the week, identifying sentence errors. Given several options students chose which part of a sentence they would change. In our discussion, we worked together to help identify why we would change certain sections and what we might change them to. This was a particularly challenging task that the students took on willingly.

RELIGION: Today lesson spoke about Cain and Abel and how God's actions are merciful. In fact, much of God's interactions with people in the Old testament, while seemingly harsh, can be interpreted as merciful as He guides us toward the correct path.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Today was Chapter Review for tomorrow's Chapter test. Students were told about the structure of the test  and were assigned a bunch of work that will best prepare them for this test. This is not homework in the sense that it will be checked and will count toward the "classwork" section of their grade, but it is wise to do a thorough job of the assigned pieces to be best prepared for the test tomorrow. Test prep: p. 24 - follow the instructions in the left column under "Learn the Skill" and review any passage in the text between pages 2 and 23. This skill is an element of the test. p.25 read the chapter summary. p.26 "Comprehension and Critical Thinking" #1-4. p. 27 "Test yourself" 1-6.

MATH  Both Math classes need to work on their Accelerated Math Practices

**Students were sent home with 2 reminders**
1) picture day is this coming Monday, September 24.
2) our first field trip is Friday, September 28. We still need at least 3 Chaperones. Please email Mr. VanRuyven if interested in joining us.

Tuesday, September 18, 2018

Today in 6A & 6B

ENGLISH: We started the day reviewing our vocabulary words using flash cards. Then we performed two tasks on the Sadlier site; Vocabulary in Context and Passage-based reading. Both of these activities offer a "grade" at the end of the assignment, however I do not record these for our records. These grade should inform your children of how they are doing in each task, where they should study more, and help to inform me in my test writing.

LITERATURE: we continued with "Crash" today and our predictions failed miserably. The story took a sorrowful turn that no-one saw coming. This gave us an excellent moment to discuss life and loss and how we might recognize when someone is being selfless.

RELIGION: Today we held a press conference for Adam, Eve, the snake and God. Each told the story of the Garden of Eden from their own perspective and our enthusiastic pool of reporters had a lot of great questions.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Today we wrapped up our Stadium Showdown as the last few presenters read their speeches and the Mayor, along with the President of the City Council, rendered their decision. Students explored the moral aspect of the debate and were posed with the question of, "Why might we consider building over an Indian burial ground and not at a site like Arlington Cemetery?"

Monday, September 17, 2018

Today in 6A & 6B

RELIGION: Today we spoke in brief about the story of Adam and Eve and the expressed instructions of our Lord to them, their mistrust in God's instructions, and their choice to disobey.

ENGLISH: Turning back to our vocabulary lessons, we now have introduced 20 Unit 2 words. In grading last week's test, I noticed that there was a lot of confusion about the meaning of some words. It is quite important that students spend some time studying their vocabulary words prior to their tests. Please rest assured that these tests only make up a portion of each student's grade and that over the long run, these scores will average out, however this should serve as a bell-weather to inform students on what amount of studying they will need to do in order to achieve the level of success they desire.

ART: Meet the Masters program started today - Van Gogh

LITERATURE: We continued the story of "Crash" today where we see an escalation in the behaviors of Crash and his peers as they bully Penn Webb. This lead to an interesting sideline about the "#MeToo" movement and the damage that harassment can do to victims. Students are acutely aware of the proper way to respond to unwanted advances.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Students performed their prepared speeches to persuade the Mayor and President of the City Council to make a strong and informed decision. Tomorrow as we conclude our presentations, the Mayor and City Council President will render their decision together.

MATH (8:00 class)  worked on two Metric worsheets due tomorrow  (9:00 class) Homework Worksheet 1-6

Friday, September 14, 2018

Today in 6A & 6B

ENGLISH: Today was testing day for Unit 1 vocabulary and grammar.  On Monday we start Unit 2.

RELIGION: Also test day! a short quiz, open book to wrap up Session 2.

AR read/math: Students had a giant block of time to catch up on missed assignments and make strides toward their AR goals.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Today we began  our activity for the next several days. Students were each assigned a role as a stakeholder in the controversial construction of a new football stadium. They are tasked with researching and writing a persuasive speech that they will present to the class in a mock "town hall" discussion Monday. This statement is meant to be no more than 2 minutes long yet still be persuasive enough to sway hearts and minds. This is their only homework for this weekend.

MATH Both classes had time to work on Accelerated Math

SCIENCE corrected previous nights homework

Thursday, September 13, 2018

Today in 6A & 6B

ENGLISH: In advance of our first English test tomorrow, today was chapter review. Students worked independently through sections A-D of the chapter review on pages 27-29. We took up these answers together as a class and then edited, using our proofreading symbols, the passage in section E together. Students will be asked to edit a similar passage on their test tomorrow. There is no homework but students should study their iWords as well as the writing process that they have been working on this week.

LITERATURE: Since we reached the midpoint of our "Crash" reading, its' high time we captured some of our understanding. Students were tasked with creating a Digital Collage of 7-10 images that encapsulate the happenings of the book so far. Students were asked to write a sentence that explains each choice of imagery. If this was not submitted in class, it is homework.

RELIGION: Today we wrapped up session two of Unit 1, which explored God's creation and our role as stewards of this earth. This includes our treatment of other people, regardless of race or gender. We will have another open-book session quiz tomorrow.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Today we practiced our Analysis skills (p.24) in identifying the main point of each paragraph of a selection, differentiating between this and supporting information. Students then applied these concepts to the 5 Analysis questions at the top of p. 27 which reference texts earlier in the chapter (p.22/23). This work was completed in class. Students then engaged in a thought experiment which had them identify in what ways would our lives be similar to or different from early Homo sapiens should we be stranded on a desert island.

Today in 6A & 6B

ENGLISH: Students built on their efforts in learning the writing process by starting a new composition, which is posted on Google Classroom. In class students practiced pre-writing and writing their initial draft. Students were then asked to use the "suggestion" feature on Google Docs to explain their revisions. The intention here is that I get to see both their initial thoughts in writing and see how they would propose to change it. Next they use a different color font in order to edit their piece. From a grammar perspective, this tells me how well they recognize errors in spelling, mechanics and punctuation. If this was not completed between class time and AR time, it is homework. The first quiz will be this Friday.

RELIGION: We advanced to Session 2 of Unit 1 where we speak about God's creation and how he saw everything as good. As an exercise, students identified something that is widely perceived as "bad" bad celebrated its positive traits (ie: Volcanos are destructive, but they produce new land and rich fertile soil)

SOCIAL STUDIES: We continued our examination of Otzi the Iceman. Students worked in small groups to explore and share answers. We finished the class with a discussion of what we learned from this activity, both holistically about research and specifically about Otzi. This document should be submitted today. It is not homework because it was preparation for our discussion and practice for conducting research.

RELIGION: Our first test of the year! (if you're not counting STAR testing...) Unit 1, Session 1. This is what students can expect our weekly tests to look like. They should be graded and posted by the end of the week.

ENGLISH: Picking up where we left off yesterday, we revisited our rough drafts and worked on Revising our work. Students learned that revision is expected to be a slow and meticulous process, and differs from Editing/Proofreading. Students read their compositions several times, each time looking for a different Key Trait of Good Writing. For homework students are expected to write a new "clean draft" and use the editing checklist on p.17 to mark up this new draft.

LITERATURE: Continuing with "Crash" today, students saw how Crash responded to the disappointment of not having his parents see him play football. Additionally, students reflected on Crash's reaction to Penn Webb's parents cheering him on. Students made predictions on what they think will happen next in the story.

STAR Testing (Math) in 6A

SOCIAL STUDIES: Today students were issued their first assignment through Google Classroom, "Who is Otzi the Iceman?" This is an excellent opportunity for students to witness both and archaeological excavation as well as gain insight into life from thousands of years ago. THIS IS NOT HOMEWORK. Students are encouraged to spend no more than 30 minutes continuing their search and will be given ~15 minutes in class before we discuss the findings together tomorrow.

ENGLISH: we began our Grammar week this week as we look at the writing process, today with pre-writing and drafting. Students are asked to product their initial draft of their writing piece (min 1/2 page-max full page. Hand written in the composition books).

LITERATURE: We continued with "Crash" today as we read chapters 12-17. Here students identified some of the motives of the main character's angst, particularly the young man's home life and the like-mindedness of his new friend Mike Deluca. The bullying tactics of the two boys are on full display at this point too, while Crash's sister shows sympathy and understanding for Penn Webb.

Spanish: Itinerant taught.

RELIGION: Today was chapter review day. Tomorrow first thing we will have our first quiz which will be open book.

SOCIAL STUDIES: On pages 18-23 of the text we learned how early man is now evolved and has begun migrating all over the world. We learned what factors influenced this movement and how moving toward a place has affected the culture of these Homo sapiens as well as begun to provide for the geography of place to affect the genetic differences of peoples (red hair vs brown hair, blue eyes vs brown eyes, etc.). Homework for this evening is on Page 23 of the text, questions 1-5.

Today in 6A!

A big thank you to all parents who came to last night's Back To School Night. Mr. Gray and Mr. VanRuyven feel like it was a great success and that we (teachers, students and parents) are all on the best footing to have a great year!

ENGLISH: Students signed up for the Google Classroom account that is open for our 6th grade. All students in 6th grade will have access to this site and it will be a one stop shop for all subjects' assignment issuance and submission. Please still check this blog for daily assigned homework. Assignments will be listed here as well.

RELIGION: Continuing our examination of the construction of the Bible, students explored the details of how this "library" is constructed. They cracked open a few Bibles and hunted for details and then created illuminated texts from a scripture verse of their choosing.

Dr. O'Bannion came to class today to discuss the finer points of our discipline policy and procedures. Your children were engaged, attentive and asked great questions.

AR READING/MATH: Students acquired new books, completed some homework and made progress toward their STAR goals for this year. Some students are concerned that their summer reading hasn't been counted in their totals as of yet. I promise to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible.

Thursday, September 6, 2018

Today in 6A & 6B

ENGLISH: After yesterday's mix-up, Mr. VanRuyven has re-tooled our vocabulary structure that will focus more strongly on word association as a front-loaded activity. Students engaged in the iWords section of Unit 1 learning multiple definitions for their key words as well as making associations to examples in their own lives. We reinforced this with some of the in-app games that are available.

PE

LITERATURE: We continued our reading of "Crash" through chapters 6-12 (pages 21-40), exploring the themes of new friends, soulmates, like-minded individuals and how other people's opinions can shape our own actions.

RELIGION: Continuing with our look at St Jerome, the structure of the Bible, inspiration from the Holy Spirit and how interpretations/translations of the Bible get approved through the Magisterium.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Chapter 1, Session 2 (p.12-15) - Early Man evolves, becomes nomadic and develops tools and harnesses fire. Students were assigned questions 1-5 on page 15 for homework.

Today in 6A & 6B

ENGLISH: Continuing with our lessons on Sadlier, we came across an issue with the assigned time zones for our region. This has now been resolved and shouldn't pose any additional issues moving forward. However, this hiccup has inspired me to change how this class will be assessed in the future. While all materials will be sourced from this site, our structured biweekly planned strategy for Vocabulary is greatly improved.

MUSIC and SPANISH: our itinerant teachers came to visit for this and all future classes.

RELIGION: We were introduced to St Jerome, the patron saint of librarians, and learned how the Bible is actually a library in itself. Additionally, students learned how the many books were chosen and interpreted through divine inspiration.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Applying what we learned yesterday about archaeologists and archaeology, we performed a rudimentary analysis of some modern artifacts (read: trash). From this evidence students inferred possible identities for who left it behind. They also explored what information this evidence does NOT provide.

ENGLISH: Set up students with their Sadlier accounts. Good news parents! Vocabulary texts are now fully online. Please ask you children to show you te new website and all the cool tools we have at our disposal for vocabulary development. We will be exploring them all week.

LITERATURE: Today we began our first book of the year, "Crash." Students read the first 20 pages (5 chapters) and made some predictions about where they think this story is going. They also analyzed the nature of certain characters which helped them understand their actions.

STAR Testing: Students performed their first STAR reading tests today.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We began our journey into prehistory today helping to understand the work that archaeologists do to interpret evidence to create the historical narrative. Students read pages 2-11 and were assigned questions 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 for homework. Students work will be checked for completion on Wednesday.

Today in 6A!

ENGLISH: In light of our song of the day (SOTD) we discussed what the word RESPECT means to us and worked to create a common definition. Students began to create Acrostic poems on poster board that will hang in our classroom for the duration of the year.

RELIGION: Students explores "My Favorite Mistake" and examined the learning that followed that mistake.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Using a braile alphabet, students decoded secret messages. They then created their own ciphers that allow them to also create encrypted messages.

Students received their Chromebooks today. If your child has not acquired a case/cover/bag with strap for their Chromebook OR had the necessary signatures completed, then they likely were not issued their computer. These students will be able to pick up their Chromebooks as soon as these two requirements are met.

Students explored Scams and Schemes originating from the internet and worked to recognize ways in which scammers might try to take advantage of them, as part of the Online Safety lessons required for all our students.

Students are reminded to locate their Recorders and Music books for their first Music classes beginning next Wednesday (9/5). Any missing materials need to come to the teachers' attention before Wednesday.
